LGPS (Local Government Pension Scheme)
The UK's largest public sector pension scheme by membership (~6.5 million members), covering local council workers, university staff, charity employees, and many others.
The LGPS is a defined benefit scheme that reformed to career average (CARE) in April 2014. The current accrual rate is 1/49 — the most generous of any standard UK public sector scheme. Revaluation is at CPI (without the +1.5% uplift NHS and civil service get). Normal pension age is state pension age.
The LGPS handles the McCloud judgement through the 'underpin' mechanism — unlike NHS/TPS/civil service where members get a choice, the LGPS underpin is applied automatically by the administering authority. Legacy service before 2014 used 1/80 (pre-2008) or 1/60 (2008-2014) final salary accrual.
